ANSI Steel Guide

The American National Standards Institute or ANSI standards for steel objects are guided by standards set by its members. ANSI standards begin with the prefix ANSI followed by an alphanumeric code and uppercase letter, with the standard's developer in the title.
  1. Shared Steel Standards Labeling

    • For steel valves used in water and sewage systems, the ANSI standard is set by the American Water Works Association or AWWA. For an example of labeling steel standards adopted from a member organization, the ANSI standard for steel gated valves size 3 through 48 is guided by the ANSI / AWWA standard C500-800.

ANSI Steel Standards versus Member Organizations

    • ANSI standards for steel products may not be as strict as member standards. For example, ANSI steel bars tested in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials, or ASTM, can become ASTM-specified.

    Light Gauge Steel Standards

    • ANSI can adopt member organization standards directly. The American Society of Civil Engineers, or ASCE, standards for light-gauge steel were published directly as ANSI steel standards in 1991.
