Instructions for Tapered Columns

Columns were crafted to support buildings and structural components such as beams and arches. They have been in existence since ancient Egyptian times and consists of three specific parts. These are, namely, the top shaft, the shaft and the shaft's base. Tapered columns are made from either synthetic textiles or wood and are patterned from fiberglass reinforced polymer, which has a stone-like appearance. You can install your own tapered columns.

Instructions

  1. Square Tapered PVC Column Installation

    • 1

Cut the column shaft to a length of 58 and 3/8 inches. Use a skill saw or jig saw to cut the column. You must always cut off the bottom and not the top of the column. The column shafts are divided in half vertically and are included in the tapered columns package.

    • 2

Organize both column halves that were cut to the length of 58 and 3/8 inches along with the two halves of the base platform for fitting. The base platform comes in halves and is included in the package. Place one of the two halves of the column shaft to stand on the base platform half. If there is excess platform base, trim off the excess using a miter saw. Stand the second half of the column shaft on the base platform half. If there is excess platform base, trim off the excess using a miter saw. Using a power drill, screw the bottom face of each column into the vertical flange on the inside of the base platform.

    • 3

Fasten the top squaring block to the header. You can use adhesive, screws, staples or nails.

    • 4

Mount the L-shaped column half around the structural post and connect the top of the internal squaring block. Connect the two mitered edges of the L-shaped column shaft half. The L-shaped columns are included in the package with the tapered columns.

    • 5

Attach the second L-shaped column half and join the mitered edges together with adhesive caulk. Connect the top of the second column shaft into the edge of the top squaring block with a screw. Attach the column to both edges of the mitered joints. It is recommended that every 6 to 8 inches, you attach the columns using 1 and 1/4-inch galvanized steel staples or finish nails. Clean adhesive caulk using a damp cloth. Make sure to wipe off the excess adhesive caulk before it dries.

    • 6

Move the column shaft into position, ensuring that it is centered.

    • 7

Attach the top face of the base platform into the floor, pier or pedestal with a screw. When screwing into masonry you should use masonry screws.

    • 8

Fasten the pre-mitered cap and base moldings to the column shaft. Cut the pre-mitered cap and base moldings to length with a power miter box, if the need arises. Screw the pre-mitered cap and base moldings together with 1 and 1/4-inch galvanized steel staples or finished nails.

    • 9

Apply adhesive caulk between the cap and base.

    • 10

Clean excess adhesive caulk with a damp cloth.
