How Log Homes Are Built

The log cabin is a common site from history books where pioneers lived in the plains. To build a cabin, it is important to follow the right steps to ensure its sturdiness.
  1. Prepare the Ground

    • Choose a site to build the cabin. Purchase logs or cut down timber from your own woods (Be sure proper timber felling permits are obtained, where required). Make sure the logs are the same size for a uniform appearance. Measure the level ground space that is needed and clear it of all brush. Smaller cabins do not require foundations. Lay two sets of logs on the ground parallel to each other.

    Join the Logs

    • Use a lock-joint as an easy way to join the logs. Cut notches into the two ends of the logs about a foot from each end. Carefully fit other logs on top and lock each into place. If there is space between the logs, use clay or plaster to spread between each log to insulate.

    Lay Interior Floor

    • A raised, wooden floor can be laid, but is more expensive. Dry and pack down the dirt until it hardens for a cost-effective alternative.

    Build the Roof

    • After completing the height of the walls, continue laying the logs in same pattern. Lay each log farther apart then the preceding log, until meeting in the middle. Cover the roof with bark, shingles, boards or straw to complete the appearance.

    Add Door and Windows

    • Measure enough space to include a door between the logs. Use wooden boards to construct the door with batten hinges at the top, middle and bottom. Make the wooden latch two feet long. Screw the latch to the door with a catch to form a sturdy lock. To add windows, measure the distance from the ground each window will be and the perimeter of the window. Use shorter logs to frame the window space. Place wooden shutters, glass or plastic to close the window openings.
