Geodesic Dome Shingle Roofing Technique

Buildings come in many different shapes and sizes. One different shape includes the geodesic dome. This specialized type of construction needs a different kind of shingling technique to ensure no leaks occur throughout the building.
  1. Identification

    • A geodesic dome is characterized by its strategically aligned triangles. The triangles join to create a sturdy semi-circle home or building. This distinct type of construction is incredibly strong, withstanding high wind flows that other buildings could not endure.

    Construction

    • Shingling a geodesic dome differs from a typical sloped roof. Metal bars, or struts, form in a jungle-gym triangle type configuration with triangle plywood affixed to the struts with nails. Apply tar paper to cover the structure completely in many layers to prevent leaks and direct water off the building. Apply shingles on each triangular section separately to form the final protective covering.

    History

    • First used just after World War I, the first geodesic design made was for a planetarium projector owned by the Carl Zeiss optical company, allowing the images to be placed up on the walls of the dome for viewing.
