Inexpensive Ideas for an Island-Themed Basement

Turning your basement into an island-themed getaway doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. There are a number of inexpensive ways you can furnish your basement to resemble the island of your dreams. You can purchase items inexpensively from a store or create them using things you already have.
  1. Hammocks

    • Depending on the configuration of your basement, adding a hammock or two can be an inexpensive way to create an island feel in your room. A hammock is a piece of fabric or netting that, when hung in between two objects (like in the corner of a room), allows for sleeping or resting.

    Images

    • Instead of going to an art store and buying a lot of island-themed pictures to hang on the wall, use your computer and printer to make your own or use pictures from your own travels. Print them out either using your own printer or at a photo shop. Frame them and hang them in your basement to add to your overall theme.

    Music

    • While entertaining in your island-themed basement, a great way to set the mood but not spend a lot of money is to add music. Find entire CDs or MP3s of tropical-themed music both in music stores and online. You can also use ocean noise to add to the ambiance and have that playing while enjoying your island basement.

    Wall Paint

    • When you think of a tropical island, images that come to mind include things like sand, the ocean and a clear blue sky. When painting your island-themed basement, take these colors into consideration. Paint in colors like light brown and light blue to add to the overall tropical feel of your basement, and add trim and accessories in Caribbean colors of coral, red and sea green.
