How to Determine the Surface Area of Different Polyhedra

When planning how much wrapping paper is needed to wrap an object, you need to know the surface area. When building a polyhedra shape, the surface area is the minimum of material needed to make the exterior. When calculating heat loss from the surface of an object, the surface area will be multiplied by the heat loss per square foot or square meter. This means that the surface area of complex shapes is an important value in both building projects and energy usage planning.

Instructions

  1. Surface Area Calculation for a Tetrahedron

    • 1

Find the value of L, the length of the standard edge of the exterior of the shape.

    • 2

Square the value of L and then multiply by 3.

    • 3

Find the square root of the result found in Step 2. The result is the surface area.

Surface Area Calculation for an Octahedron

    • 4

Find the value of L, the length of the standard edge of the exterior of the shape.

    • 5

      Cube the value of L.

    • 6

Multiply the value found in Step 2 by 3.4641. The result is the surface area.

Surface Area Calculation for a Hexahedron

    • 7

Find the value of L, the length of the standard edge of the exterior of the shape.

    • 8

      Square the value of L.

    • 9

Multiply the result of Step 2 by 6. This is the surface area of the hexahedron.
