The first United States patent for a jaw crusher was issued in 1830. Even though there have been new technological advances, the style of the jaw crusher has changed very little for years. A jaw crushers contain fixed and movable components that form a cone-like feeder into the crusher space, making the fed material smaller as it follows the conical shape.
Materials fed through the top of a gyratory crusher are crushed by the closing of the coinical space between the fixed and moveable portions on the frame. The moveable portion has a slightly circular movement that gyrates. These crushers can be used as primary or secondary crushers to break up and further refine larger rock material.
The cost of each type varies due to several factors. However, it is generally said that installation of a gyratory crusher is more expensive than a jaw crusher installation. Long-term use and repair costs over time may make the cost spent for installation of the more expensive option the better buy, depending on the consumer needs.
