How to Measure for Trim Molding

Trim molding can finish the look of a window, door or room. Getting the proper measurements for the trim molding is important because they tell you how much trim molding you need to purchase, as well as where to make the cuts on the molding. When you measure for trim, always double-check your work. Measure once and then measure again to make sure you got an accurate measurement. This will keep you from accidentally cutting the trim molding in the wrong place.

Decide on a place to begin measuring for the trim molding. It is easier to measure from left to right, so choose a place in the room and measure clockwise around the door, window or room.

Begin measuring for the trim molding. Measure for the first length of trim molding with a measuring tape. Write the measurement down on a piece of paper. If needed, have a partner or friend hold one side of the measuring tape while you measure from the other side of the measuring tape. Repeat with the rest of the measurements. Try to take the measurement to within 1/16th of an inch. Write each measurement on the paper. Label each measurement so you can transfer it to the trim molding when you begin cutting the molding to size.

Add together the different measurements on the paper to come up with one final measurement. It is also useful to add 10 percent to the final measurement to account for mistakes in cutting. This final figure will tell you how much trim molding you need to purchase.
