How to Bend a Metal Bar

Not knowing the right way to bend a metal bar may result in you hurting yourself or others. The traditional method of bending is heating metal up, hammering it, and dropping it in water. More modern methods include rolling, using a mandrel, pressing, and table forming. Each process takes a different amount of time, and the difficulty will depend on the thickness of the metal bar. Make sure that you have the right equipment before you attempt to bend a metal bar.

Instructions

  1. Metal Bender

    • 1

Stick the metal bar between the two vertical pipes on the metal bender.

    • 2

Apply pressure to the handle of the metal bender and push with all your strength until the desired angle is reached.

    • 3

Release the handle and pull out the metal bar.

    Rolling

    • 4

Set the angle with the rolling dies. There is usually a meter at the side indicating the angle with the corresponding die settings.

    • 5

Feed the metal between the rolling dies. Most rolling dies are operated electronically, and you will need to locate the start button. The location varies from machine to machine. Press the start button. Smaller rolling dies are operated by a lever. Press down on it as hard as you can.

    • 6

Press the stop button once the angle has been made, if the machine requires it, releasing the dies to their original positions. Release the lever and return it to the original position if you are operating a manual roller.

    • 7

Remove the metal bar by pulling it out.

    Mandrel

    • 8

Set the angle of the mandrel by configuration. Methods of doing so will vary from mandrel to mandrel. If you have purchased a mandrel, read the operator's manual or call customer support. If you are using a mandrel in a facility, consult the supervisor.

    • 9

Feed the metal bar through the opening of the mandrel and locate the start button. Press the start button. The bar will then run through the machine and come out at the desired angle.

    • 10

Press the stop button and remove the metal bar.

    Metal Press and Table Form

    • 11

Set the metal bar through the opening of the press or table form. If you are using a manual press, skip to step 4.

    • 12

Set the distance between each press electronically if you are not using a manual press or form.

    • 13

Press the start button. Press the stop button when there is no more metal between the two boards or dies on the press or form. Skip to step 5.

    • 14

Press down the lever and feed the metal bar between the press a few inches. Repeat until you have done this to the whole bar.

    • 15

      Remove the metal bar.
