How to: Three-Layer Stucco

Stucco is a product used both inside and outside the home. It's typically plaster- or cement-based and provides an attractive finish to interior and exterior walls. The three-layer stucco method is generally applied to the exterior of the home, over the top of a vapor barrier. Stucco comes in a variety of colors, saving you from the need to paint after the application process.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply stucco to the house and spread it with a trowel. Spread this coat, called a scratch coat, to a depth of 3/8-inch. Allow this first coat to dry for several hours before continuing.

    • 2

Install the second layer of stucco, troweling it to a depth of 3/8-inch. Let this coat dry before you continue.

    • 3

Apply the final coat of stucco. Use a trowel to spread the finish coat to a depth of 1/8-inch.

    • 4

Texture the top coat during application or immediately following application. Swirl it in semi-circles or pat it with a flat trowel, allowing the trowel to pull the stucco out, creating small peaks in the stucco surface.
