How to Turn Measurements into Architectural Measurements

Correctly formatted dimensions are very important on architectural drawings to provide information accessible to engineers and contractors. Incorrect dimensions or measurements can result in costly delays and changes. Nevertheless, measurements are easily converted into architectural measurements by using formatting and units. Remember to use the proper system for your location: the United States uses the Imperial system, and the rest of the world uses System International (SI)

Instructions

Collect the measurements of an architectural element. The measurements should provide all of the dimensions of the object, including length, width, height and material thickness. Write these dimensions in a list.

Define your unit. If you are using the Imperial, or English, system, your measurements are in feet and inches. The basic unit of the Imperial system is the inch, so all dimensions should have the inch included. If you are using the System International (SI), or metric, system, your measurements are in meters and millimeters. The basic unit of the SI system is millimeters, so all dimensions must be translated to millimeters.

Convert the measurements to the correct architectural measurements. For Imperial units, write the dimension as feet and inches or simply as inches. For example, a counter can be dimensioned as 2'-8" to denote 2 feet and 8 inches or 32" to show 32 inches. Measurements that are in perfect foot units must include the inches, so 5 feet would be dimensioned as 5'-0" for 5 feet and 0 inches. Also, you can use inch fractions (but never decimals) for dimensions smaller than an inch.

For SI units, all dimensions must be in millimeters, and the millimeter abbreviation does not need to be shown. So, a wall measuring 5 m and 43 cm would be dimensioned as 5430. Similar to Imperial units, SI architectural measurements must always acknowledge the millimeter, so a building that is 60 m tall is dimensioned as 60000. Never use decimals or fractions of a millimeter.

Convert all units to the proper system. Divide SI dimensions by 25.4 to get Imperial dimensions in inches. Multiply Imperial inches by 25.4 and Imperial feet by 304.8 to get SI dimensions in millimeters.
