How to Cover Geodesic Domes With Stucco

Geodesic domes offer unparalleled strength and ease of construction. Made up of many triangular segments, they can be composed of an array of materials and finishes. Covering a geodesic dome in stucco provides a waterproof and airtight membrane over the seams where the segments meet. With just a few commonly found materials, you can easily cover an existing geodesic dome with stucco.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix commercially produced stucco according to the manufacturer's directions. As there are many different manufacturers of stucco, follow the specific directions for the brand you have purchased. Alternatively, you can make stucco yourself by mixing one part Portland cement, three parts sand and one-half part lime by volume.

    • 2

Cover the surface of the dome with chicken wire. Try to keep the wire as close to the surface of the dome as possible in order to give the stucco some reinforcement and keep it from cracking or bulging. It is especially important to follow this step if the surface of the triangular panels is smooth to the touch, such as with glass or plastic.

    • 3

Apply the first layer of stucco evenly over all surfaces of the dome. The stucco should be thick enough (about 1/2 inch) to totally cover all the chicken wire, embedding it into the stucco. Allow this first layer to dry for 1 to 2 hours.

    • 4

Scratch the first layer with a plasterer's rake, creating grooves that are about 1/8 inch deep to let the final coat adhere. Allow the stucco to cure for two to three days and keep it moist by dousing it with water for maximum hardness. The slower stucco dries, the harder it will eventually become.

Apply the final coat in whatever color or pattern you choose. This layer should be about 1/2 inch thick. Paint can be applied after three days if desired.
