How to Draw a Cutting Line in AutoCAD

AutoCAD is a computer-aided design program that allows architects and designers to draft on a computer. With AutoCAD, you can draw cutting lines. Cutting lines have two purposes in architectural representation and AutoCAD: to show what should be cut and to show what is cut. These are two different types of lines; however, you can use the same commands to create both. A cut line that shows what should be cut is a thin line that is almost always dashed, whereas a cut line that shows what is cut, also called a section cut, is a thick, continuous line. Both line types can be adjusted with the commands "Lineweight" and "Linetype" on AutoCAD.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a drawing file on AutoCAD. Pan and zoom to the location where you would like to draw your cut lines. Draw the lines and press "Esc."

    • 2

Select the cut lines and type "Linetype." A window opens with various line types. Select the appropriate line type or press the "Load" button for other line types. Cut lines that show what should be cut are dashed lines, so select "Hidden" or "Dashed." You do not need to change the line type for cut lines that are section cuts -- this type should remain as "Continuous." Adjust the Global Scale Factor to ensure the line type appears on the scaled, printed drawing. Press "OK."

Select the cut lines again and type "Lineweight." The lines will have the default value. Change the line weight to one of the choices given in the scrolling selection window. The cut line that shows what should be cut is light, so use 0.18 mm to 0.05 mm. Cut lines that show section cuts are heavy, so use 0.25 mm to 0.50 mm. Press "OK."
