How to Build a Ground Bunker

Building your own backyard bunker may seem daunting, but is actually a rather straightforward process. Building a bunker that will protect you and your family from explosions or other threats is possible through proper planning. Once built, stocking the bunker with food and supplies, as well as the addition of plumbing, can make it very comfortable.

Things You'll Need

  • Sea container (empty)
  • Excavator
  • Concrete sewer pipe (40-inch diameter)

Instructions

    • 1

Excavate a suitable amount of earth to allow for placement of your sea (shipping) container. Dig down deep enough to allow for at least 6 feet of earth to be packed on top of it.

    • 2

Place the empty sea container into the trench you have excavated. It would be a good idea to permanently seal/weld the doors closed to prevent moisture from getting into the container.

    • 3

Mount and secure the concrete pipe vertically on top of the sea container. This will become the entrance/exit passageway to the bunker.

    • 4

Backfill the trench, burying the container and concrete pipe up to the upper edge of the concrete pipe.

    • 5

Add a suitable door of your choosing to the top of the concrete pipe entranceway, as well as a rope ladder to allow access down into the container. Furnish the container as you like. Bunkers can be made as simply or elaborately as you prefer. Plumbing would be helpful but can be expensive and very involved; However, storage of water as well as containers to hold waste, food stocks, lighting, communication equipment and medical supplies would be most important.
