Small Post & Beam Cabins

Small post and beam constructed cabins will outlast most other types. The difference is that square framing posts are used in an exposed aesthetic for both a decorative and architectural purpose. More attractively grained or hard wood is utilized with hidden connector hardware. Wooden pins are placed but they only reinforce the metal connectors that are placed at the top of each post. Also, round logs may be used in a strong post and beam construction.
  1. Potential Problems

    • Post and beam work in cabins creates an appealing, rustic look. However, there are some problems inherent in the architecture. Over time gaps may form between the posts and the walls. When this happens in a small post and beam cabin there is less concern. Even though these may be load-bearing, the post can still be cosmetically sealed with molding or a similar quick fix. With larger structures, gaps may need more attention.

    Insects

    • Termite and other insect infestations may seem more likely with all of that exposed wood, but it isn't a big problem. The risk is about the same since most homes are framed with wood despite the design differences. Termites are no more attracted to the post and beam wood -- there is just more of it. There are regions with greater populations of termites and other wood-eating insects. Get to know the risks when selecting a potential construction site. Take approved measures that are suggested for that particular region during construction. Regular insecticide treatments may be needed in some areas while building with a sheet metal foundation barrier may solve the problem.

    Hybrid Post and Beam

    • Post and beam cabins can be combined with combined with traditional home construction techniques. This allows for the look of log cabins, but at a lower cost and very versatile wall aesthetic. The weight of roof framing and purloins adds stability to the lower logs. Exterior finish can be of any kind, as can the interior walls. Traditional sheet rock interiors with paint or paper can be insulated to any desired rating. Exteriors can run the gamete from concrete fiber to wooden lap siding.

    Cabin Kits

    • When looking to create a post and beam style cabin, you may consider a kit. These kits provide everything needed for a complete home and can be assembled by a home builder or DIYer. First, decide how much work is appropriate to the project at hand. Kits can include everything or just the basic post and beam frame. Prices are usually determined by the amount of included materials. To save money find out which items can be purchased locally and plan on doing so. This may save shipping costs. Additionally, finish materials may go on sale while the cabin is being erected.
