How to Calculate House Area in Squares

The most difficult part of measuring house area is the different shapes that may be present. Most people may know how to find the area of a square room but not a circular room or an odd-shaped room where the surface area is more of a triangle shape than anything else. In all these cases, a tape measure and the proper mathematical formulas are all that's needed to find the square footage of your home.

Instructions

  1. Square or Rectangular Rooms

    • 1

Use the tape measure to measure the length of the room. Example: 10 feet.

    • 2

Measure the width of the room. Example: 12 feet.

    • 3

Multiply the length of the room by the width to find the room's square footage. Example: 10 X 12 = 120 square feet.

    Triangle Rooms

    • 4

Use a tape measure to measure the height of the triangle. Height is a figurative term -- in this case, measure the center point of the triangle to the center of the base of the triangle. Example: 9 feet.

    • 5

Measure the base of the triangle. Example: 12 feet.

    • 6

Multiply the height by the base and divide this number by two. Example: 9 x 12 = 108 / 2 = 54 square feet.

    Circular Rooms

    • 7

Use a tape measure to measure the diameter of the circle. Example: 12 feet.

    • 8

Divide the diameter in half to get the radius of the circle. Example: 12 / 2 = 6 feet.

    • 9

      Multiply pi by the radius squared. Example: 3.14 X 6 X 6 = 113.04 square feet.
