How to Refill 20 Lb Propane Tanks at Home

Propane tanks are a common sight in the summer when they are used to power gas grills. Of course, propane serves a range of other functions, including heating homes and powering engines. Propane gas is stored as a liquid in the tanks; the high pressure keeps the gas liquified until it is released for burning. Instead of paying a technician to refill the tanks, you can do it at home if you have access to a supply of propane.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the 20-pound tank on the scale alongside your supply tank, if there is a scale.

    • 2

Make sure the nozzle running from the propane supply tank (the source of your propane) is closed.

    • 3

Slide the nozzle into the opening of the 20-pound tank.

    • 4

Turn the nozzle until it fits with the grooves on the 20-pound tank and locks into place.

    • 5

Open the 20-pound tank by turning the hand wheel counterclockwise several times.

    • 6

Slide the latch on the nozzle from the closed to the open position to allow the gas to start flowing.

    • 7

Close the nozzle again once the tank is full, as indicated by the meter on the 20-pound tank or by the scale. Propane tanks are designed with an automatic stop mechanism once they are full, so you can't "overfill" it, but the gas will still be running from the supply tank.

    • 8

Turn the hand wheel clockwise until it is firmly closed.

    • 9

Untwist the nozzle from the 20-pound tank carefully and slowly. There may be a small emission of excess gas that escapes. Avoid making skin contact with the gas, as it is kept in very cold temperatures when stored in the tank and may cause an injury.
