How to Cast Capstones

Capstones typically sit on top of pillars and walls. They can also be used for walkways and patios. By using concrete and a stone mold, you can cast your own capstone. Stone molds come in a variety of shapes and sizes from which you can choose to customize your outdoor or indoor living space in an interesting way.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a thin layer of mold release product to the stone mold. This will help the mold to last longer, and make it easier to get the stone out of the mold once it has dried. You can buy a mold release product from an online stone mold store, or use an item from your pantry, such as vegetable oil.

    • 2

Follow the directions on the concrete mix bag exactly to make your concrete.

    • 3

Pour the concrete mixture into the stone mold. Then either tap it with a mallet or shake it back and forth to release any air bubbles and help smooth the top of the concrete in the mold.

    • 4

Leave the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours. The longer the concrete cures, the better; you can leave it for up to three days.

    • 5

Turn your stone mold face down onto a flat surface. Press slightly on the center of the mold while pulling back gently on the corners. The stone should come out of the mold with little or no effort.
