How to Round Steel Plates

Steel and other types of metal can be tapped out into a round shape. This may be useful in making artwork, cooking pans and many other household needs. With patience, steel plates and sheets can be easily tapped out into any shape, including concave versions, using a normal woodworking hammer.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the vise grips to the carpenter's horse. Squeeze the vise grips to open them and slip them over the horse.

    • 2

Place the steel plate onto the carpenter's horse. Squeeze the grips again and slip the steel plate in between the horse and vise.

    • 3

Begin tapping out the steel sheet using a hammer. The sound of the metal on metal can become very loud, so using soundproof earphones is a smart idea.

    • 4

Center out the sheet metal using the hammer and work towards the outside of the metal. Work the hammer clockwise around the metal.

    • 5

Rub in an oil conditioner to prevent the steel from rusting as the hammer may have caused a small amount of abrasion on the steel's surface.
