How to Frame an Arch Opening

An arch can add a very dramatic appearance to an opening and be a beautiful way to enhance your home. Framing an arch opening is a straightforward process, but one that requires some experience with building and construction projects. Framing an archway correctly requires cutting materials precisely to ensure the end result looks flawless. An archway kit can be installed in drywall and supply enough support to an opening that the drywall can't provide on it's own.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the opening. Mark the center of the opening.

    • 2

Remove all the pieces from the archway kit. Read carefully all the directions for the measurements for cutting the widths of the wooden frames. If no directions accompany the kit, place the wooden frames against the outer edge of the opening. Mark on the wood frames where two pieces overlap to serve as a rough cutting pattern.

    • 3

Cut each wood frame at the marked widths. Use a saw to cut lengthwise along the center of each piece of wood frame.

    • 4

Mount the wood frame to the opening using nails to hold it into place. If you had to split the wood frames, line one up at a time against the opening and nail them down. Use three nails at the center of each piece and three nails at each edge. The opening is ready for drywall.
